Dutch house newcomer AAT unveils her debut EP ‘Get Funky’ on Haven Trax, arriving on 17th October. A two-track EP packed with playful sound design and unstoppable energy, this double A-side is a bold introduction to AAT’s clinical studio prowess. Following a whirlwind two years that saw her go from Toffler Talents 2023 winner to international touring artist and elrow resident, with recent gigs across Asia and appearances at major festivals like Loveland, Thuishaven, Mysteryland, Boothstock, and PIV, her reach continues to grow.
Kicking off AAT’s first-ever outing, 'Get Funky’ blends airy synth work and bleepy electronics that dance over a slinky drum groove, while an elastic bassline wraps tightly around the rhythm, creating a funky hypnosis. ‘Like This’ goes deeper, riding a chugging bassline and punchy kick that lock in hard. Gritty yet refined, the track features deep swirling stabs and a catchy female vocal hook that brings both edge and charm, with its heads-down, late-night energy.
Q: Please introduce yourself
Hey there, my name is AAT, and I am an upcoming DJ & Producer from The Hague, Netherlands. I am excited to share that my very first release, my "Get Funky" EP, is coming out on October 17 on the Dutch label Haven Trax.
Q: One person you'd dream to have a coffee with?
The owners of Studio 54 in New York. I've always been fascinated by disco music. Having a coffee with them to hear about the early disco days and all the wild moments at the club would be an absolute dream. I was definitely born in the wrong era, I would've been partying there every weekend.
Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
Being invisible. Then I could sneak into every backstage or booth to watch my favorite artists, or peek at the controller to scan some track IDs!
Q: If you would have been given the chance to do a film score, what movie would you choose and why?
For sure, the Fast & Furious series. I used to watch all those movies with my family, so it would be amazing to be part of something that brings back those memories.
Q: Who has been the most influential in your music career? And why?
That would be my dad. He loved all kinds of music and always played songs at home that made us dance together. He had a thing for soulful sounds. He also taught my siblings and me to work hard, stay humble, and stay positive. Those three things guide me every day. I truly feel like he's watching over me, and that gives me a lot of motivation and strength. I am trying to make him proud up there!
Q: Tell us about your journey, what got you to where you are today?
I started mixing during the first COVID lockdown, when I was studying in Berlin. It was the perfect moment to dive into it completely. I was quarantined on a student campus with lots of others, and every weekend I hosted little parties in my room. I couldn't mix at all, but no one cared. We just danced all night long.
My first official booking came in May 2022. During that set, I realized it was the best feeling ever, and that I wanted to do this for real. Sadly, two days later, my dad passed away. It was a very difficult time, because two days before I found my passion in life, and two days later, my biggest example was gone. I didn't focus on DJ'ing for a few months until January 2023, when I applied for a DJ competition in Rotterdam. I was lucky enough to win, and from that moment, I put all my time and energy into music again.
Then, in early 2024, I booked a three-month trip to Asia and decided to reach out to clubs there. I spammed them with emails, and somehow it worked haha. I ended up playing in Shanghai, Tokyo, Seoul, and Bali. That's when events in the Netherlands started to notice me more. I'm grateful to live in a small country with so many parties every weekend, which has given me a lot of opportunities to grow. I also feel very lucky to work with my manager, Yassine, who has opened many doors for me and helps me every single day.
What else played a big role in my journey so far is Elrow. Earlier this year, I participated in their contest to become their new resident DJ, and I still can't believe I actually won. It's given me the chance to perform internationally often, meet amazing people, and play in front of thousands. I'm very grateful for their trust and all the opportunities they've given me so far.
Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone just starting out their career in music?
First of all, be kind. I really believe that spreading positivity will always come back to you. Second, invest in content. Having good videos or photos from your gigs is worth it. It helps a lot nowadays, as your socials are your business card. And finally, work hard. What you put your time into will grow.
Q: Can you recall a DJ set or performance of yours that remains unforgettable to you? Where did it take place, and what makes it stand out among all others?
Actually, last weekend's show was a big highlight for me. It was for Elrow in Tenerife. Right before my set, I found out I was getting a confetti moment, and I decided to play one of my upcoming tracks from the new EP. Playing my own track in front of so many people, with confetti flying everywhere and my three sisters dancing behind me, was something I'll never forget.
Q: How has your music style evolved over the years?
My style has changed a lot! When I first started playing, my sets were full of commercial edits and mostly rolling tech house tracks. I was still figuring out my sound back then. Now, I finally feel really happy with where I am musically. I spend hours every week digging for new and old tracks, and I get so much joy from finding hidden gems online. I don't stick to one subgenre of house. During my sets, I love blending different styles like deep tech, tech house, jackin house, funky house, UKG, and more uptempo sounds. By this, I try to keep my sets fresh and diverse every week.
Production-wise, I've only been producing for about a year and a half, so my sound is still developing. I also don't want to limit myself to one subgenre. My tracks can go from raw house to something more techy.
Q: If you were to venture into another music genre, which one would you choose and why?
Hard House! I often go to hard house events, and every time I am amazed by both the energy of the artists and the crowd. I would say this fits my vibe behind the booth as well, so I might start an alter ego… some time!
Q: Could you name 3 tracks that got you into electronic music and why?
1- Dangerous Dan, Nicky Night Time - A History
My all-time favourite track, which I found on a YouTube set back in 2020. The old-school breakbeats and vocals that tell the story of house music give me goosebumps every time. I've played it many times since.
2- Teddy Pendergrass - Life Is A Song Worth Singing (Jamie Jones Remix)
This one is special to me. The lyrics are beautiful, and the whole track feels like a journey. I haven't found the right moment to play it yet, I'm saving it as a closing track for a special occasion.
3- David Berrie - Airplane To Madrid
This was one of the first tracks I ever downloaded onto my USB in 2020. I've played it countless times during my sets, and it just never gets old. It always works.
Q: Can you recommend a hidden gem in your home country that would be perfect for a rave?
That would be Thuishaven in Amsterdam. It's a beautiful venue that hosts amazing artists, and the crowd is always in such a great mood. I'm not just saying that because my debut release is coming out on their label, haha, it really is one of the most unique spots for a proper rave, and that's why it makes it even more special for me to release my debut EP with them.
Q: Could you tell us about your upcoming releases and plans for the year?
There are some really exciting things coming up. Amsterdam Dance Event is around the corner, which is my favourite time of the year, and I'm super grateful to have several bookings during it. Besides that, I have new debuts coming up in Romania, Poland, and Saudi Arabia, plus my second all-nighter on December 20. I honestly can't wait for these ones!
When it comes to releases, I'm focusing a lot on new productions until the end of the year. There are some special tracks in the pipeline that I can't wait to share soon.
Q: Can you share a fun fact about yourself that most of your listeners are probably unaware of?
1- I am from a family of 7 kids! We are all very close, and they often come to my bookings with me.
2- A few years ago, I won Peggy Gou's limited edition KRK speakers during an online giveaway. I still use them whenever I mix at home or throw a house party.
3- The lucky numbers of my dad are: 17, and coincidentally, my first ever release is releasing this October 17. It really feels meant to be.
