14 FAKTS INTERVIEW WITHAUBREY FRY

13/08/2024

Q: Please introduce yourself

Hi, Aubrey Fry here. I am a Welsh DJ and producer signed to Bedrock, Last Night on Earth, The Soundgarden, Musique de Lune, Rhythm Cult, Night Colors, plus more but to name a few and now Twelve Point! I like to play my music around Europe and have dates coming up in South America also. Watch this space.

Q: One person you'd dream to have a coffee with?

Carl Cox, he has the same passion for techno and fast cars that I do.

Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?

To read minds, so I can know who is genuine and who is not :-)

Q: If you would have been given the chance to do a film score, what movie would you choose and why?

An alien movie, I love Ridley Scott. I worked for him on a few of his movies when I was a runner at a sound post-production studio in London years ago. My music is quite spooky, so I think it would be a good fit.

Q: Who has been the most influential in your music career? And why?

John Digweed and Sasha.

Q: Tell us about your journey, what got you to where you are today?

After years out of the scene, during and post-COVID allowed me to start writing music again. I sent the tracks I wrote to Digweed, and he signed them all. I have pushed forward ever since.

Q: Everyone goes through ups and downs, what’s one habit you adopt to push through the downs?

Stay clean and stay sober. You cannot push through downs when you are not of sound mind. To remain focused, you need to focus.

Q: Can you recall a DJ set or performance of yours that remains unforgettable to you? Where did it take place, and what makes it stand out among all others?

Playing at Bedrock London for three hours has been a highlight for me. From bedroom to Bedrock is a huge jump and stuff of dreams.

Q: How has your music style evolved over the years?

I love all styles, not so much nosebleed techno or commercial drum and bass. But I feel that every style is worth exploring; being eclectic is super important to me. I feel like my mixdown skills have made a huge jump forward in the last few years. I do not like to use visual reference software, just a good set of ears and top speakers.

Q: If you were to venture into another music genre, which one would you choose and why?

Liquid D&B with a gnarly edge.

Q: Could you name 3 tracks that got you into electronic music and why?

1) Shakespear's Sister - Black Sky (dub extravaganza part 2)

2) Dr Atomic - Schudelfloss (High On Hedonisim Mix)

3) DJ Hell - Hot In The Heels Of Love (Dave Clarke Remix)

Q: Can you recommend a hidden gem in your home country that would be perfect for a rave?

Castle, Coch just outside Cardiff.

Q: Could you tell us about your upcoming releases and plans for the year?

I have one a month for the next five months; they are all very different. I am also working on ACiDTRAX (my band project) material and a collab album with my good friend and fellow Welsh DJ—Jimpy (yes, the same one from the GU San Francisco CD).

Q: Can you share a fun fact about yourself that most of your listeners are probably unaware of?

I love to cook, which is good considering my name.

Grabbing Smoke - Fordal (with Aubrey Fry remix)  [Twelvepoint]
