Q: Please introduce yourself
Hi I’m Ferreck Dawn, a house DJ from the Netherlands and active as a DJ and producer for about 23 years now.
Q: One person you'd dream to have a coffee with?
I’d love to have a coffee with Quincy Jones and listen to his stories about recording music back in the day, working with Michael Jackson and producing the Thriller album.
Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
I’d love to be able to be teleport so I can just ‘jump’ to the locations around the world to DJ and not having to spend so much time on airplanes and airports.
Q: If you would have been given the chance to do a film score, what movie would you choose and why?
Jurassic Park as it's one of my favourite movies when I was a kid and would love to have a go at that.
Q: Who has been the most influential in your music career? And why?
It’s not one person, it’s a mix of DJs like Luciano, Loco Dice, Sven Vath, Erick Morillo, Sander Kleinenberg.
Q: Tell us about your journey, what got you to where you are today?
Started out as a gabber DJ for the first few years, then changed to house and techno and started producing music. Slowly but surely started to sign songs to labels. Had a break out song in 2014 with Love Too Deep, causing me to stop my daytime job and go music full time. Had another track in 2018 that did really well called In Arms which further established me in the house music world. After that I kept releasing songs on the most renowned house labels and doing shows around the world and here we are today :)
Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone just starting out their career in music?
Practice DJ’ing a lot and try to do gigs. Start off small and local but really pay attention to the crowd. Learn how to read the crowd, it's very very important during your set.
Also start to watch a lot of tutorials about producing music. It’s essential nowadays to have your own sound so really start investing time in that.
Q: Can you recall a DJ set or performance of yours that remains unforgettable to you? Where did it take place, and what makes it stand out among all others?
It’s hard to choose one but the first time performing at festivals and clubs that have been on my bucket list like Tomorrowland, EDC Las Vegas, Pacha Ibiza and Space Miami will always stick in my mind. It makes you proud to achieve those goals as that’s what you’ve been working for all this time.
Q: How has your music style evolved over the years?
As mentioned, I started out as a hardcore / gabber DJ, then hardstyle and hard techno and slowly went to house, techhouse and deephouse. I've been doing the latter styles for a long time now, like 17 years.
Q: If you were to venture into another music genre, which one would you choose and why?
I love R&B and soul so that would be the pick for me.
Q: Could you name 3 tracks that got you into electronic music and why?
1- Daft Punk - One More Time as it’s my favourite house record ever.
2- Junk Project - Control. Old Belgian trance record that I loved when I was going out.
3- The early Filterheads techno on Carl Cox’ Intec label as that was my first real introduction to techno.
Q: Can you recommend a hidden gem in your home country that would be perfect for a rave?
My favourite venue in the Netherlands for that is called the Gashouder, an old gas container tombe in Amsterdam where techno event Awakenings has been held for 20 years. It’s an amazing industrial venue with a unique atmosphere.
Q: Could you tell us about your upcoming releases and plans for the year?
As we are slowly heading to the end of the year, I’m doing 2 more releases. My track Serious on Toolroom will be out on October 17. Been road testing it for months so I’m super excited to finally see it being released. Closing the year with a deeper vibe, a deephouse track that I really like called ‘Velvet & Ice’ on Selected, end of November.
Q: Can you share a fun fact about yourself that most of your listeners are probably unaware of?
I think what I mentioned earlier, me starting out as a gabber DJ playing music that’s 170 bpm is something a lot of people don’t know.
