14 FAKTS INTERVIEW WITHGAWP

23/09/2025

GAWP has been churning out club weapons as far back as we can remember & his consistency speaks volumes to his talent. He's delivered a moody yet energetic piece that feels as right in darkened late-night rooms as it does watching the rain fall from the seclusion of your home. But he's not alone; as label head Doc Brown has jumped in to up the angst with his revision of the introspective vocal.

Q: Please introduce yourself

GAWP here… a DJ and producer who’s been making music for over 20 years. I’ve released on labels like Dirtybird, Heldeep, Toolroom, and many many more… toured the U.S. with Oliver Heldens, remixed Idris Elba, headlined in Australia, and played some big shows across Europe, including London’s Printworks. Also mastering engineer at Most Wanted Audio in the gaps!

Q: One person you'd dream to have a coffee with?

Would have to be Pete Tong, I’d love to do his head in asking questions all about the decades of how things have changed and what it was like back in his early days.. R1 really shaped me from my dad taping the essential mix.

Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?

Would be awesome to have the ability to see what’s going to happen ten minutes before it happens. Then some world making decisions could take place and prevent negative things or at least help towards! Also you prob save so much time with certain stuff.

Q: If you would have been given the chance to do a film score, what movie would you choose and why?

Probably aim for something like Top Gun, it would be hard to beat the original but who doesn’t like a challenge!

Q: Who has been the most influential in your music career? And why?

The Crookers - bot is now a good friend and he is such a great human, pre knowing him I went to play Switzerland and I was watching computer music on an iPad and he was on the same plane was so star struck 🤣 did say hello to them. The style they had was like breaking all the rules and just super fun music.

I started out with Alex and we were called The Squatters, you will hear the Crookers influence in our music also Switch was a pioneer for us.. so that said I’m actually a qualified hair dresser which has no connection to music but I did figure if I had scissors I can make money anywhere. anyway I digress.

Q: Tell us about your journey, what got you to where you are today?

Journey's been wild.. I just never fit into the education system really I knew I wanted to do something with music from being young.. I ran events and many years of connections, booking big artists, etc. It was a development of the industry path.. after the Squatters I thought that was it but then GAWP was born, no press pics and promo just made music and saw what happens.. next thing I’m flying round the world and needing press photos.

Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone just starting out their career in music?

1. Invest in hearing protection when in clubs.

2. Be outgoing and build as many connections as you can.

3. Use great quality samples in your production.

4. Buy music plugins instead of drugs.

Q: Can you recall a DJ set or performance of yours that remains unforgettable to you? Where did it take place, and what makes it stand out among all others?

This is a hard one! From castles, submarines, old banks, stock exchanges to farm houses.. even once played a nightclub ferry once in South Korea. But anyways you can see my hairdresser waffle working now.. back to the question: my fav place would have to have been when I played Dirtybird Campout. The label who got Mixmag label of the decade, just the vibe, the music at the time, the people, it was a moment.

Q: How has your music style evolved over the years?

I’d say it’s not evolved that much but just got a better sound sonically, I sometimes worry about not becoming a musical snob as most people don’t listen to music from a mastering engineers point of view which is hard for me to not be particular so I’m hoping the lose raw early sounds of gawp still remain and shine through (well not shine) but remain.

Q: If you were to venture into another music genre, which one would you choose and why?

Prob early house that Chicago jackin sneak carter etc.. I do dabble in that for fun but mines a bit heavier. It’s just got that groove and limitations on the productions which make it unique.

Q: Could you name 3 tracks that got you into electronic music and why?

This is tough.. but here is 3:

1. BBE - Seven days and one week (classic dance track with iconic sounds and memories attached)

2. Stretch n vern - I’m alive (banger and never fails)

3. JX - son of a gun (hands in the air, back then)

Q: Can you recommend a hidden gem in your home country that would be perfect for a rave?

Would have to say in a nuclear fallout bunker, we have many some decommissioned but they also have tunnels to each other and think if you did a tour it would be great to go via the tunnels to each location.

Q: Could you tell us about your upcoming releases and plans for the year?

Not sure when this will publish but got many releases, but the main one is out 26th Sept on Unlearn Records, a label who helped me on many levels with bookings for events and also being there when many were not. It’s called Feel Alone, it’s also a bit more progressive for me but nice to flex a bit different.

Also 12th Sept collab with Cash Only called Remedy that’s going down well and something on Low Ceiling in October..

Q: Can you share a fun fact about yourself that most of your listeners are probably unaware of?

I don’t have any tonsils.. oh and had a watch and men’s boxer short brand.
