Q: Please introduce yourself

I’m Jesabel, a Producer / DJ from Sydney, Australia now based in London, UK!

Q: One person you'd dream to have a coffee with?

Oooo tough one! There are so many but honestly my grandfather. He passed away when I was very young and I don’t have any real memory of him but my Dad tells me how amazing of a man he was. One coffee would be unreal but I think it would be a long one - so many questions!

Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?

Teleportation! Being able to get from the UK to Aus to see my family whenever I want and very quickly would be the best. Also, getting from gig to gig in record time would be great too!

Q: If you would have been given the chance to do a film score, what movie would you choose and why?

Any James Bond movie would be wicked to score. I grew up on these absolute classics so being able to give them a modern day spin would be so sick.

Q: Who has been the most influential in your music career? And why?

I came through on the true EDM era of the late 2000’s / 2010’s so it was Calvin Harris, Swedish House Mafia, Laidback Luke, Deadmau5 just to name a few that started to grow my love for dance music. Then discovery took place and it’s been a never ending journey to finding and evolving my sound ever since. Now? I’m influenced by countless artists, friends and colleagues - Yotto, Estiva, Cristoph, Nordold, My Friend, Simon Doty, Cassian…SO MANY! The talent in this industry is honestly insane.

Q: Tell us about your journey, what got you to where you are today?

I’ve been DJing for about 13 years now - 10 years of that in Australia where I had an amazing career but when covid came and went I wanted for a little more and felt the only way I could write, release and perform the music I wanted was to move to London to be closer to the action. I had to take a few steps back to go forward and I’m for sure still on that journey but I’m 2.5 years in now and seeing the real benefits of that decision to move.

I’m so lucky to connect with the people I do whether it be audiences, label teams, venue teams etc. That’s what it’s all about!

Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone just starting out their career in music?

Always act authentically and genuinely to whom you are. This is a creative career built on passion. Following trends or trying to manufacture a career that doesn’t ring true to you makes it hard to build a sustainable future in music.

Q: Can you recall a DJ set or performance of yours that remains unforgettable to you? Where did it take place, and what makes it stand out among all others?

I have played so many fun shows but I did a 6 hour b2b with my friend Carina Lawrence at our party No One Above. It was a small intimate party but the minute we pressed play on the first track the vibe was just there. The energy, the sound and the community was just so amazing. I was grinning ear to ear the entire time.

Playing for ASOT and Ultra recently was also such an amazing experience on so many levels. Experiences like this are a reminder you are right where you need to be :)

Q: How has your music style evolved over the years?

Yeah absolutely! I always say I was blessed with ears that like most types of music. I’m quite versatile in my music taste and there is a place for everything. Growing up I was pop obsessed - give me Kylie Minogue, The Spice Girls! I was also heavily involved in musical theatre throughout school which influenced my singing a lot.

My early DJ days were very deep house focused and this became fairly commercial for me. I’d always admired progressive house and techno from afar and my move to London allowed me to niche down and focus on the genre I loved. Even now I love to colour outside the lines of my sound and experiment. It’s what makes it fun and creative.

Q: If you were to venture into another music genre, which one would you choose and why?

I already follow all sorts of genres. Honestly, I want to be into country music so bad haha! So any recs send them my way. Otherwise I love soul music - pop/soul in particular.

Q: Could you name 3 tracks that got you into electronic music and why?

1- Remember - Deadmau5, KaskadeYou’re

2- Not Alone - Calvin Harris

3- Believe It (Cazzette’s Androids Sound Hot Remix) - Spencer & Hill, Nadia Ali

I Remember is my favourite record of all time. I will never tire of this 8 min track. I just think everything about it is genius. I remember hearing You’re Not Alone in a bar in the town I grew up and I had it on repeat at least 17 times a day for a long time - this record allowed me to discover so many other Calvin tunes and then a who ecosystem of legends in the game. That Believe It remix was more my gateway into the less commercial side of dance music. It also connected me to the world of Ministry of Sound and the compilations - a great era for dance music.

Q: Can you recommend a hidden gem in your home country that would be perfect for a rave?

There is this club called Chinese Laundry - it is hot, sweaty, and dirty. It’s an intimate venue which is sick because you are just all up in the vibe together. So much fun. I would love to throw a rave there.

Q: Could you tell us about your upcoming releases and plans for the year?

There are some really cool releases coming up - I’m super excited. In particular my record ‘Toi’ out on Volaris’ label HORIZN, Friday 25th July. I’ve played this out a fair few times now and it really goes off. It’s energetic and the french vocal makes it a little sexy. Can’t wait for you all to hear it.

Q: Can you share a fun fact about yourself that most of your listeners are probably unaware of?

I don’t drink coffee. Call me crazy considering my industry revolves around no sleep but I cannot handle the jitters at all hahaha! Not for me.
