Malta’s Jewel Kid debuts on Radio Slave’s Rekids with the ‘Explicit Behaviour’ EP. It follows two decades carving out his place in the House scene with releases on labels including Abode and Toolroom, while heading up his own Alleanza imprint. He was a winner of the Carl Cox Worldwide Remix Competition and a recipient of the Best Dance Production award at the Malta Music Awards, while his music routinely dominates charts such as the Beatport Top 10.
Q: Please introduce yourself
Hi, I’m Jewel Kid from the island of Malta (Europe), and I have been DJing and producing music for more than 25 years.
Q: One person you'd dream to have a coffee with?
I know this might sound cliché, but probably Michael Jackson. He was a very big inspiration for me growing up, and I have sooo many questions to ask him.
Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
To have a fresh new pair of ears stored away which I could take out every once in a while and listen to the tracks that I’m working on. We listen to our tracks way too much, and it’s so hard to judge sometimes.
Q: If you would have been given the chance to do a film score, what movie would you choose and why?
This little movie called “Lost in Translation”. For some reason I feel that I could connect well musically with this picture.
Q: Who influenced you the most in your music career and why?
My big brother, he was the one that introduced me to this world.
Q: Tell us about your journey, what got you to where you are today?
As I tell everyone, it's the time I spent on my craft. That’s what makes or breaks your career. People always ask me what’s the secret, and it simply boils down to the number of hours you spend doing what you think you do best.
Obviously, you must love what you do otherwise you won’t stick to it when times are tough. The sheer passion I have for music is something that is way bigger than me.
Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone just starting out their career in music?
Be patient. Be in this career for the long haul because there are going to be a lot of setbacks. This is a marathon, not a sprint, and if you are patient to play the game long enough, you will be rewarded with some moments that are priceless.
Q: Can you recall a DJ set or performance of yours that remains unforgettable to you? Where did it take place, and what makes it stand out among all others?
Definitely our Alleanza Showcase at Sonar on the beach of Barcelona. Although all odds where against us from authorities trying to shut us down, it ended up being listed as one of the top 3 events of Sonar that year. A moment where I felt that things were really starting to work out for me and the label.
Q: How has your music style evolved over the years?
I think my journey goes in circles. I tend to swerve a bit away from who I truly am musically at times, but somehow, I always find my way back to the Jewel Kid sound that resonates best with me and my listeners.
Q: If you were to venture into another music genre, which one would you choose and why?
Techno! I love everything about that genre. There was a time where I came up with another alias and was producing techno like crazy. Sadly, it was impossible for me to run both aliases at full potential and had to put that aside. At least for the time being :)
Q: Could you name 3 tracks that got you into electronic music and why?
1- Soft Cell – Tainted Love.
If I remember well this is the first electronic track that lit up something in my brain. I remember a friend of mine giving me a listen to it on his Walkman at school. Something happened at that very moment that set the whole course of my life.
2- Filter Science – Darkness Falls (Joey Beltram Remix).
This is the very first vinyl I played in front of a crowd around 2001, and after seeing the crowd go nuts on the drop, I knew that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
3- DJ Rolando – Knights of the Jaguar.
This track was like something that was sent from another planet when it first came out. It made me super curious about the whole genre and made me want to dive deeper to see where all these sounds are coming from.
Q: Can you recommend a hidden gem in your home country that would be perfect for a rave?
Manuel Island – it's a very small piece of land in between our historic capital city of Valletta and the modern mayhem life on the other side. I think an event there would infuse the two together.
Q: Could you tell us about your upcoming releases and plans for the year?
Well it has been a very busy summer for me. My new single “Talking to You” dropped on Steve Angello’s Size label a couple of weeks ago and I just release an EP on Radioslave’s Rekids label. I have 2 other singles lined-up up for the end of the summer on Myth of Nyx and my own imprint Alleanza. I just came from shows in the UK, Canada, Bahrain and Ibiza – where we did our Alleanza Showcase on the rooftop of the Tomorrowland Store.
Q: Can you share a fun fact about yourself that most of your listeners are probably unaware of?
That if I’m not making music I’m probably playing on my PS5. I’m a hardcore gamer and a perfect relaxing day for me would be a 12hr marathon playing my favourite games. I miss it sooo much when I'm travelling with my shows.
